Hike Like a Local: Stoltzekleiven to Fløyen

Bergen’s Favorite Hidden Trail

While most tourists in Bergen take the Fløibanen funicular up to enjoy the view, locals know there’s a better way—on foot. The trail from Stoltzekleiven to Fløyen is one of the most popular local hikes, offering challenging steps, rewarding views, and a peaceful forest route far from the crowds

And while Arch Adventures doesn’t offer guided hikes, we’re locals ourselves—and we love sharing the hidden gems of Bergen.

Start with a Climb: Stoltzekleiven

Located in the Sandviken neighborhood, just a short walk from the city center, Stoltzekleiven is a steep stone staircase with over 900 steps. It’s a local favorite for quick workouts, but also a gateway to some of Bergen’s best natural scenery.

  • Estimated time: 30–40 minutes to the top (depending on fitness)

  • Start location: Fjellveien

  • Tip: Turn around as you climb—the views get better with each step.

At the top, take a breath and enjoy the panoramic view over Bergen and the surrounding fjords.

Continue to Fløyen

Once you’ve conquered Stoltzekleiven, the trail to Fløyen begins. It’s a more relaxed hike through quiet forest paths and offers a mix of gravel roads and trail sections. This part of the hike gives you a true taste of Norwegian nature without leaving the city.

  • Time from Stoltzekleiven top to Fløyen: ~45 minutes

  • Scenery: Forest and small lakes

At Fløyen, you’ll arrive at the famous viewpoint overlooking Bergen, and there are several places to grab a snack, coffee, or a well-earned beer.

Going Back

From Fløyen, you can either hike back down via marked trails or take the Fløibanen funicular back to the city center.

  • Funicular schedule: Every 15 minutes during daytime

  • Walking time down: About 45–60 minutes

Pro Tip: Combine With a Fishing Trip

Want to explore Bergen from the sea as well as the mountains? After your hike, join one of our guided fishing trips or book a private charter to see the fjords from a whole new angle.

Practical Info

  • Footwear: Wear proper hiking shoes—the steps can be slippery when wet

  • Bring water: There are limited refill stations on the trail

  • Weather: This is Bergen—bring a rain jacket just in case!
